State Police Commissioner Announces Retirement

Reuben F. Bradford will step down on Feb. 1.

State Police Commissioner Reuben F. Bradford is retiring Feb. 1 after three years as the state's top cop.

Bradford sent a letter to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy earlier this week announcing his intention to step down after three years on the job as head of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, according to a report in the Hartford Courant

According to the Courant, Deputy Commissioner William Shea is the frontrunner to replace Bradford, who came back to the state police three years ago after working in the private sector for 15 years, most notably as the director of security for the National Football League, after retiring as a major in the force.

During Bradford's recent tenure as commissioner, criticism had mounted over the consolidation of state police dispatch centers and the long delay in releasing the official state police report on the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.
