State Police: Bear Struck and Killed on I-84

The bear was hit by a car near exit 70 on Sunday, state police said.

A bear was struck and killed by a car early Sunday morning on Interstate-84, state police said.

According to an accident report, a 1994 Ford Taurus driven by a Mansfield woman was traveling westbound on I-84 in the far-right lane at 1:29 a.m. on Sunday.

About a half-mile east of exit 70 in Willington, a black bear went onto the highway and was struck by the car, according to an accident report. The car stopped on the right-hand shoulder and the bear, killed by the impact, landed in the center median, state police said.

The car's airbags were deployed and the car was totaled, state police said in an accident report. The crash was "unavoidable," state police said.

The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Rockville General Hospital for undisclosed injuries, according to an accident report. State police did not classify the injuries as life-threatening.

No charges were filed in the crash, state police said.
