Updated: Somersville Mill Fire Still Under Investigation, Arson Considered

The state police and fire marshal are still working to determine the cause of the fire that destroyed the historic building, and are seeking the public's help.

The state police and state and local fire marshals are still conducting their investigations into the fire that destroyed the on Saturday morning.

Lt. Paul Vance from the state police confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing, and could not comment on any findings.

On Sunday morning, state police posted signs offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest, conviction, or prevention of an arson fire. The number to call with a tip is (800) 842-7766.

Vance said that the police posted them, but couldn’t discuss an open case that is under investigation. He could say that the police, “always seek public help in any case.”

Somers First Selectwoman Lisa Pellegrini said that the state police are treating this as an arson investigation.

“That’s extremely, extremely broad,” she said. “It’s under investigation.”

It is unknown if there was lightning in the area that early morning, but fire officials said that the state fire marshal’s office was gathering definitive information. Fire officials are also unaware of any electricity or other power source going to the building.

For the residents of Somers, this is the second in six months. In the early morning hours of January 1, the  burned down.

Vance couldn’t comment on that investigation at the moment.
