Somers Home Destroyed By Early-Morning Blaze

The fire on Bilton Road was reported shortly after 12:30 a.m.

A small ranch-style house in Somers has been rendered uninhabitable after a fire that broke out shortly after midnight Wednesday.

The blaze at 5 Bilton Road was reported at 12:34 a.m., and was knocked down within an hour, Somers Fire Marshal Bob Morpurgo said.

"The house is a total loss, but the owner was able to get out and move his truck away from the garage before it burned," Morpurgo said.

Mutual aid was provided by the East Longmeadow, MA and Shaker Pines fire departments.

Town property records show the owner as Thomas Deabill, who was the sole occupant of the home, Morpurgo said. The house was built in 1948, and is located about 100 feet from the Massachusetts state line.

The cause of the fire had not been determined as of mid-morning Wednesday. A team from the state fire marshal's office is en route to the scene to assist in the investigation.
