Somers Animal Control: Skunk Tests Positive for Rabies

A skunk that had direct contact with a dog near George Wood and Four Bridges Road had rabies, according to a press release from Somers Animal Control.

On Monday March 25, 2013 Somers Animal Control received a report of a dog that had direct contact with a skunk in the area of George Wood RD and Four bridges road area of Somers.  The skunk was submitted for rabies testing at the State Lab in Hartford.  The State Lab notified Somers Animal Control on March 27, 2013 that the skunk was positive for rabies.

We would like to stress the importance to all residents not to approach or handle any wildlife. Please make sure you explain to your children the same.

Clinical signs of rabies in animals include fever, loss of appetite, excessive irritability, unusual vocalization, change in behavior, restlessness, jumping at noises, trouble walking, excess salivation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, stupors or unprovoked aggression.

Somers Animal Control would like to remind all residents it is state law to vaccinate your dog(s) and cat(s). If your animal is not vaccinated or the vaccination has expired you should contact your veterinarian. If you have any questions in regards to rabies you can contact your local health department, animal control office, or your veterinarian.
