Somers Animal Control Issues Alert About Bear Sightings

What should you do if you spot a bear?

Recently there have been several bear sightings in the town of Somers. Somers Animal Control would like to stress to all residents not to approach any wildlife, and make sure you explain to your children not to approach any wild animals.

Residents should take some basic precautions to protect themselves and help keep bears out of their yard.

  • Keep all garbage secured properly. If possible, keep the garbage inside a garage or other building.
  • Remove all bird feeders, because bears are attracted to the seed.
If you DO see a bear DON’T panic, stay inside. Do not let your dogs out to scare the bear away; doing so will put your dog in a dangerous situation, especially if the bear has cubs.

If you do find yourself outside with a bear in close proximity, make noise as you slowly walk to safety. Bears are here, living amongst us and these basic precautions will protect you and the bears.

For more information on bears, please visit the DEEP web site.

Animal Control would also like to remind all residents that June is dog license renewal month in Connecticut. Please visit the town clerk and have your dog licensed.
