Shaker Road Fire Displaces Family of Six

The call came in at 1:28 p.m. on Wednesday when the homeowner discovered the blaze.

A family of six was displaced by a fire that occurred on Wednesday afternoon on Shaker Road in Somers.

There were no injuries reported due to this incident and no one was home at the time of the fire.

At 1:28 p.m., the Somers Fire Department received a call for a fire at 15 Shaker Rd. Deputy Chief Frank Falcone said that the fire was reported by the female homeowner who came home for lunch at this time. He said that she went into the attached garage, and then opened the door that leads into the house. When she opened the door, she found black smoke all the way to the floor, he said.

“She went to a neighbor’s and called 911,” he said.

Falcone said that when the department arrived at the scene, it found a fire in the first floor living room. The Somers Fire Department arrived at the scene in three and a half minutes, and 30 seconds later, it was backed up by the Hazardville Fire Department.

The fire was under control in about 15 minutes, and then the fire department stayed on the scene for quite a long time, doing salvage and overhaul, and the investigation.

Falcone said that the fire heavily damaged the living room and a good portion of the first floor – actually burning a hole through the floor. He said that the couch was burned and that there was smoke and heat damage throughout the first and second floor.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but Falcone said that the department knows that the point of origin was the living room. He added that the damage amount in terms of dollars is unknown, but that it is significant.

“Significant damage, and significant dollar loss,” he said.

The American Red Cross was on scene to assist the family. Falcone said that the family had lodging, but were in need of clothing and toiletries and that the Red Cross was assisting with this.
