“This kid is relatively young and if he made it in there, could have fit in,” Richardson said, adding that it was near lunchtime and kids would be milling around, making the lockdown the smart decision.

Assistant Fire Chief Vince Gambacorta said that when the call came in, the LifeStar helicopter was immediately launched due to the information that was given.

“So it gets a good head start – by the time we get here, it’s not as long a wait,” he said.

Ellington ambulance personnel initially treated the man while waiting for the helicopter to arrive. Richardson said that the man was conscious and alert, and was joking around, but that he has some injuries.

Gambacorta said that the man appeared to have a laceration on his head, but didn’t know the extent of the injuries.
