Maintenance Worker Falls at Osborn Correctional Institution

The man fell approximately 15-20 feet while preparing to work on the facility's boiler.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Monday, emergency personnel responded to after a maintenance worker fell approximately 15-20 feet.

The man was preparing to do work on the facility’s boiler when he fell. While it is unclear how he fell, Department of Correction spokesman Andrius Banevicius said that it is being classified as an unfortunate accident. No foul play is suspected.

He said that while oftentimes maintenance workers will have supervised inmate workers who help them, but that was not the case here. Banevicius said that no inmates were present at the time of the accident.

Banevicius said that the man was transported by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center. He said that LifeStar was originally called but that after a reevaluation, the injuries were apparently not as serious as originally believed, and it was decided that he could be transported by ambulance.

The state police were on the scene, as they are with pretty much all workplace accidents, Banevicius said. He also said that the Department of Correction is conducting an investigation.

Banevicius could not comment on the man’s identity or his condition.
