2 Hospitalized After Being Rescued from Somers Fire

A 30-year-old woman and her 7-year-old daughter were pulled from their burning apartment on Route 190 Wednesday morning.

Update 12:30 p.m.

A mother and daughter were hospitalized Wednesday morning after being rescued from a fire that trapped them in their second-floor apartment home in Somers.

Crews from both Somers Fire Department and Hazardville Fire Department in Enfield responded at 8:06 a.m. to multiple calls of a structure fire at a four-family home located at 68 Main St.

When the firefighters got to the scene, they encountered a man who was carrying a 7-year-old girl across the driveway to the ambulance that had arrived just before, said Deputy Fire Chief Frank Falcone.

Falcone said the man was driving by when he saw the fire and smoke coming from the home.

"He stopped went around back of the house, up stairwell, forced the door, and crawled under the smoke," Falcone said. "He grabbed the girl pulled her out, and as he was carrying her she kept saying 'my mother and father are in there.'"

The responding fire crews began knocking down the fire from the interior and immediately conducted a search for any other occupants. That's when they found the other victim, the girl's 30-year-old mother, semi-conscious in an adjacent bedroom, Falcone said.

He said the responders performed a resuscitation on her and transferred her to paramedics from the Ambulance Service of Manchester (ASM).

Both the mother and the daughter were then taken to Bay State Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. It's not clear the extent of the victims' injuries, however Falcone said they at least may have suffered from smoke inhalation.

While the girl initially said her father was home too, officials later determined he was not in the house at the time of the fire, Falcone said. Another person was on the first floor of the building in a separate apartment but escaped safely.

Falcone said the fire companies were able to contain the fire to the second floor bedroom, which appears to be the point of origin. There was heavy smoke, fire and heat damage to the second floor and some water damage to the first floor.

The case is currently under investigation by the local and state fire marshals, and the Connecticut State Police.

Main Street, also known as Route 190, was closed between Enfield and Somers during the response. It has since been reopened.
