Enfield Man Sentenced to 14 Years for Fatal 2012 Accident

Kyle Berry, the Enfield man charged in the 2012 death of two East Windsor residents, was sentenced to 14 years in prison — the maximum sentence possible under his plea agreement — Tuesday, according to a Hartford Courant report.

Berry pleaded no contest to two counts of second-degree manslaughter and evading responsibility in an automobile accident causing death in November 2013.

Berry will remain on probation for five years after serving his sentence, according to The Courant.

The Courant also reported Judge Joan K. Alexander, who sentenced Berry, expressed doubt in Berry's ability to be rehabilitated in prison because of his prior convictions.

According to court documents, Berry's prior convictions include assault, violation of probation and maliciously killing an animal (Berry kicked a cat to death, The Courant reported).
It was around 1 a.m. on Feb. 14, 2012 that Berry's Chevrolet pickup truck slammed into the back of a sedan carrying 57-year-old Michael "Mickey" Kenney and 34-year-old Colleen Caruso.  

Kennedy and Caruso were killed in the crash.
Court records say Berry's pickup truck was traveling at a high rate of speed — at least 72.53 miles per hour, and caused the car carrying Kennedy and Caruso to lose control upon collision.

Berry reportedly fled the scene of the crash, which occurred on Broad Brook Road. Berry was coming from Somers, having been drinking just before the incident at Mickey Finn's Cafe.
"The pickup truck struck the rear of the sedan causing the sedan to lose control, strike an embankment, strike a tree, and roll over before coming to a rest in the north bound travel lane of Broad Brook Road," court documents say.

In the arrest affidavit, an Enfield detective wrote in his opinion, "Kyle Berry did show an extreme indifference to human life by operating his motor vehicle in a manner which caused the death of two persons."
