Ellington-Somers Police Blotter: Dec. 28-Jan. 3

The following arrest reports, provided by Connecticut State Police, are accurate as of Jan. 4, 2013. Items on this list reflect charges filed, not convictions.

Dec. 28

Zachary Lovell, 19, of 40 Elm Meadows in Enfield, was observed traveling eastbound on Route 190 in Somers. A trooper observed that Lovell was not wearing his seatbelt. Lovell was arrested for DUI and not wearing a seatbelt. The vehicle was towed from the scene by Bolles Motors.

Between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., an item was taken from the ladies' locker room at the YMCA located at 11 Pinney St. in Ellington. If anyone has information regarding this incident, please contact State Police Troop C at 860-896-322 ext. 8039.

Dec. 29

Duane P. Rein, 69, of 92 Shenipsit St. in Ellington, was traveling westbound on Upper Butcher Road, approximately two tenths of a mile east of Ellington Avenue, in Ellington when he lost control on the snow covered road and struck a utility pole. Rein then evaded the scene and was later stopped on Ellington Avenue, approximately three tenths north of the intersection with Upper Butcher Road. He was later arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The vehicle was towed due to damages received in this collision and Rein sustained minor injuries.

Dec. 30

A 32-year-old Hartford woman was traveling eastbound on Route 190 in Somers when she lost control due to the snowy road conditions and drove across the westbound travel lane, off the westbound shoulder of the roadway, and into a telephone pole. There were no injuries as a result of the accident. The vehicle sustained damage to the driver’s side and there was minor visible damage to the bottom of the telephone pole. The vehicle was towed by Interstate Towing. The woman was found at fault for traveling too fast for road conditions. 

Dec. 31

Taylor Brunelle, 21, of 59 Heatherwood Dr. in South Windsor, was stopped for a vehicle equipment violation on Pinney St in Ellington. Upon further investigation, it was determined that he was operating under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both. Brunelle was subsequently arrested and charged with driving under the influence and failure to have headlamps. He was processed, issued a misdemeanor summons, and released on a $1,0000 non-surety bond, pending his court appearance at Rockville Superior Court on Jan. 16.

A 57-year-old Ellington man was traveling northbound on Shenipsit Road, three tenths of a mile south of Mountain Road, in Ellington when he skidded on snow in the roadway and skidded off the right shoulder and struck a tree. No injuries were reported. The man was issued an infraction for failure to maintain the established lane. 

Jan. 1

Joshua M. Groves, 21, of 11 Eva Cir. in Vernon, was arrested for an incident that took place in Ellington. On Jan. 1, troopers from Troop C proceeded to the house in an effort to execute an active arrest warrant. Groves was located at the residence and was taken into custody. He was subsequently transported to Troop C where he was processed in accordance with police procedure. Groves was charged with traveling unreasonably fast/fast for conditions, operating under the influence of drugs/alcohol, and a stop sign violation. He was held on a court set bond of $10,000. Jan. 3

Fahim Shabazz, 39, was transported from Northern Correctional Institution to Rockville Superior Court so that an active arrest warrant could be served. He was placed under arrest for assault on a public safety officer. Shabazz was processed and held on a $150,000 bond set by the court. He refused to sign his notice of rights and refused to be fingerprinted. Shabazz was then turned back over to the state marshals to be presented to the court.
