Update: Child Dies After Bicycle Accident in Somers

A young boy riding a bicycle had an accident, sustained a serious head injury and later died, according to emergency personnel.

Update, 8:45 p.m.

Ellington-Somers Patch has learned that the 8-year-old involved in a bicycle accident on Monday evening has died.

The staff at his school, , are having a meeting before school on Tuesday and district counselors will be available to help the children.

Update, 7:10 p.m.

According to Deputy Chief Frank Falcone, the child is an 8-year-old male who was riding his bicycle.

Falcone said that a vehicles was not involved and that this was a bicycle accident. Falcone said that the unidentified child was not wearing a helmet, hit his head on the ground and sustained a serious head injury. The boy was was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA.

Falcone said that the accident happened in front of 17 Maple St. - not the child's address - and that there are a bunch of different stories as to what happened.

A trooper at Troop C in Tolland confirmed that a child was hit by a car in Somers on Monday night.

He said that the child was on a bicycle somewhere on Maple Street, but that's all the information that he had.

The child was flown to an area hospital via LifeStar, but the trooper did not know which one.
