Early on Saturday morning, firefighters from all over the area responded to a .

When a correctional officer passing the mill called a fire dispatcher just after 2 a.m. on June 2 he reported as a possible structure fire at the abandoned mill. Minutes later fire personnel were on scene and the report went from a possible structure fire to a full-fledged structure fire that required two more alarms.

At one point early in the radio communication, the initial officer on scene is heard asking a fire dispatcher to "contact Hazardville Water Company, tell them to bump up the pressure on the mains, we're going to need a lot of water on this."

Seven minutes after the initial call, fire command is heard saying that the "whole thing is gonna go at this point, there's nothing stopping it."
