Is your home safe from thieves while on vacation?

Summer is almost here and many of us will be heading out on vacation for a few days or weeks.  Is your home safe from thieves while you are on vacation?

Here are some great tips to keep your home safe from thieves and not be an obvious target  while you are away. The last thing you want after coming home from a great vacation is to find your home broken in to.

  • Make your home look occupied while you are away.  Purchase a few timers for your home, this is an inexpensive way to fool thieves.  Plug them into lamps and radios, having them turn on at various times throughout the day and evening.
  • Have your neighbors pick-up your mail and newspapers while you are out.  A pile of newspapers on your doorstep and mail in the box is a signal to thieves you are not home.
  • Have a friend or neighbor park their car in your driveway.
  • Don’t publicize your vacation.  Yep, we love to show pictures on our Facebook pages of where we are, but doing this makes you an easy target for a break-in while you are gone.
  • If you plan to be gone for several weeks, ask someone to care for your lawn while out.  An overgrown lawn can give the appearance of no one being home as well.

These are just a few tips that may help prevent your home from being a potential target for thieves. Now go enjoy your vacation, knowing your home will be safe.
