Obituary: Betty Rae Kirby, 57, Ellington Middle School Secretary

Kirby passed away last Friday in Manchester.

Betty Rae (Wilson) Kirby, 57, of Vernon, beloved wife of Kenneth M. Kirby, died Friday December 13, 2013 at Manchester Memorial Hospital.

She was born December 8, 1956 in Rockville Centre, NY., beloved daughter of the late Raymond J. & Sarah E (Jaap) Wilson and had been a resident of Vernon since 1987. She was with the Ellington Board of Education and then school secretary at Ellington Middle School.

A faithful member of the Salvation Army Citadel in Manchester, she was active in the church choir, was the pianist for the youth choir and leader of the young girl Sunbeam program for a time. Betty Rae loved crafting, sewing and knitting, she was an avid reader and loved to go to her summer home in Old Orchard Beach, known by her children and grandchildren as “Grammy’s Beach House.” 

In addition to her husband she is survived by three daughters, Diane Hodson and her husband Keith, Jessica L. Millett and her husband Timothy, and Victoria A. Kirby, five grandchildren, Michaela Hodson, Liam Hodson, Noah Hodson, Emma Millett and Callie Boyajian all of Vernon. She also leaves her brother Kenneth Wilson and his wife Charlotte of Suffern, NY., and a niece Kristina Wilson of Arlington, VA. 
The family would like to send a special thank you to her oncology nurses, Donna and Rose for the wonderful, loving care shown to Mrs. Kirby.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday December 18, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army Citadel, 661 Main St., Manchester. Burial will be private in the East Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Tuesday December 17, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army Citadel, 661 Main St., Manchester, CT. 06040 or to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA., 02445-9924.
