Mary Niemann, the 'Face of the Resident Trooper's Office,' Passes Away

Calling hours are on Wednesday and the funeral is on Thursday for the late Ellington resident.

Mary Niemann, a longtime town employee who was considered the face of the Tolland Resident State Trooper's Office, has passed away.

She was 75.

She lived in Ellington and had worked at the Resident Trooper's office since 1985. She was known for her sense of humor both in and out of the office. She passed away on Sunday.

In reflecting on the loss of a colleague on Tuesday, the staff at the Tolland Town Clerk's office called Niemann, "a kind lady … who always made visitors feel good about their day."

Added Sgt. Todd Stevens, "She was the first one everyone saw when they came through the door. Mary always greeted everyone with a smile. She was professional but treated everyone politely."

Niemann was known to treat visiting children to State Police souvenirs - like pocket flashlights. She also referred to many of the troopers as her "boys."

"Yes," Stevens said. "She was almost like an extended mother. she always looked out for our well-being. She was like family."

Calling hours have been scheduled for Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Small & Pietras Funeral Home, 65 Elm St., Vernon.
