DOJ Seeks 'Double Jeopardy' for Zimmerman

In this installment of 'A View From the Deck', J. Wiley Dumas discusses the verdict of the George Zimmerman trial and the unwillingness of many to accept it

NOTE: The following is OPINION. It is the Point of View of the author and his alone.

Normally, when a person is found innocent by a jury, the matter is over. That certainly is NOT the case for George Zimmerman, following his acquittal on all charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

Unhappy with the verdict lawfully rendered by a jury, the NAACP among others, is pressuring the Department of Justice, i.e. Eric (the With) Holder, to seek to prosecute Zimmerman on charges of violating Martin’s Civil Rights, and to establish that the shooting was a ‘Hate Crime.’

But, going back since the incident, no evidence that Zimmerman’s shooting of Martin was influenced by race exists.

Still, the DOJ, caving into pressure from the NAACP and other Civil Rights groups, feels that wasting more of OUR TAX DOLLARS on the beating of a dead horse (no pun intended) is justified, if for no other reason than the fact that they are unhappy with the lawful verdict.

Add to this that Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, is seeking to copyright her son’s name, so that no media or other outlet (including this blog) can use the name of her son without paying her royalties.

I’m sorry, but I sincerely hope this is just shock and denial on Ms. Fulton’s part, because seeking to copyright one’s dead son’s name does not exactly sound like something one does following the death of a child.

Also tossing his hat into the ring of controversy is the Rev. Al Sharpton, who stated on Sunday that he was traveling to Florida with an army of ministers and other activists to protest the verdict (and to make certain that he remains in the forefront of the news).

Meanwhile, in Oakland, CA., far removed from Florida, dozens of people have been arrested following a series of violent, destructive protests over the verdict, or so they claim.

(My feeling here is that the protestors just wanted a reason to destroy other people’s property)

From the beginning, the case was racially-charged and attracted the attention of people who never should have put in their two-cents worth regarding their opinion, such as when President Obama famously stated “If I had a son, he’d look just like Trayvon Martin.”

It’s certainly understandable that there are many that are unhappy with the verdict of ‘Not Guilty,’ but to attempt to retry Zimmerman in the Court of Public Opinion in some surrealistic form of ‘Double Jeopardy’ by the launching of a Federal investigation funded by OUR TAX DOLLARS in the obscure hope of trying to prove racism where it did not previously exist on the part of Zimmerman is asinine to say the least.

But Eric (the With) Holder needs something right now to distract We, the People from his actions (or inaction) as head of the DOJ, and to use the famous words of Rahm Emanuel: “You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.”

Such as creating evidence against Zimmerman where it did not exist before, perhaps?

That George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin is a tragedy, to be certain. But the greater tragedy is to seek to further punish Zimmerman by making certain that he never knows a moment’s peace for the remainder of his life.

Trust me when I say that he will always be visited by the ghost of Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman himself will have to live with the fact that he took another human’s life, and no matter what he says, he will forever be affected by that action, an action that occurred in the heat of the moment, and resulted in the death of a young man.

The jury has spoken and has found George Zimmerman innocent.

It’s now time to try to heal.
