A View From the Deck: Is Damascas Obama's 'Saviour'?

In this installment of 'A View From the Deck', local author J. Wiley Dumas asks if the scandal-ridden administration may use the Syrian Civil War as a distraction for the American people

NOTE: The following is OPINION. It is the Point of View of the author and his alone.

Another week has gone by and scandal continues to rock the Obama administration. Unanswered questions about Benghazi, the IRS targeting of Conservative groups and individuals, and even more developments in the NSA snooping on phone records and possibly gathering e-mails of millions of American citizens.

Let’s also toss in a prostitution scandal in the State Department under that ‘Pantsuit Aficionado’ Hillary Clinton and you’ve got a mess that really challenges the public’s faith and trust in almost every single aspect of our government.

And what does our esteemed Commander in Chief think of all of this? He states he is “Disappointed,”  “Concerned,” and even “Outraged.”

And yet, to date, nobody has been fired at the IRS, the State Department is being looked at (again), but not too closely, no one can find out exactly what the NSA was doing grabbing information, ObamaCare is proving to be anything but ‘affordable’, and the U.S. Attorney General Eric (the with) Holder is still employed. A man who once was held in contempt of Congress. What does this say about our President’s choices? What does this say about our government overall?

And what does the President plan to do? Vacation on Cape Cod for two weeks.

As he has demonstrated previously, whenever faced with a conflict, Obama is ‘going to ground’ in the hope that things will blow over.

But he may have a saving grace brewing that will serve to distract the American people from all of the scandals in his administration and allow for him to come out looking like the hero he believes himself to be: Syria.

The White House announced Thursday that the Obama administration has ‘conclusive evidence’ that Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime has used chemical weapons against his opposition, killing up to 150 people in the last year and crossing what President Obama has called a ‘red line’ that would lead to greater American involvement in the crisis.

Boy, that’ll distract us from all the mess in ‘Wonderland on the Potomac’, won’t it?

But does the United States, in any way, shape, or form, need to get involved in the Syrian mess? Haven’t our brave, young troops already shed enough blood on foreign soil? Haven’t We, the People, already paid for ‘aid’ to enough foreign nations? For once, can we not keep out of another nation’s internal issues?

Nobody likes tyranny. Nobody can stand idly by as another is bullied. But why has it become the exclusive business of the United States of America to interject itself into the problems of other nations? Why can’t our ‘allies’ such as England, France, and even Russia come to the aid of the Syrian rebels?

Simple. Because they do not trust them.

But, the opportunity to distract the American people from the scandals of his administration must surely be weighing heavily on the President’s mind, and giving military aid to the Syrian rebels could certainly send his stock up in certain circles.

But, keep in mind that a few years ago, the White House had ‘conclusive evidence’ that Iraq had ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction.’ We all remember what that led to, don’t we?

The American people have had enough of wars and conflicts that do not serve to protect our borders or our citizens here at home.

If the President is serious about being taken as a leader of integrity, he should fire USAG Eric Holder and newly-appointed National Security Advisor Susan Rice, cut to the bones of the scandals facing the IRS and the State Department, no matter where or who they lead to, and give believable assurances that the NSA is not stockpiling the phone and internet records of millions of American citizens for some form of future influence or censure.

Meanwhile, the rabbit hole of Cape Cod and his golf game beckon.

Si vis Pacem, Para Bellum
