Farmers are transplanting
seedlings, turning the soil and pleading with Mother Nature for warmer
temperatures in preparation for opening day of the Ellington Farmers’ Market on
May 10th from 9-12. The inaugural event of the
season at Arbor Park on Main Street will feature this spring's
newest Barnyard Babies, including a “Name the Piglet Contest” with a $25.00 market certificate awarded to the winning name. Nearly all vendors from last season will be returning including the ever-popular Luann's Bakery, The Fish Market and Copper Hill Farm (organic produce and pork). The market also boasts an exciting array of new vendors including Artisan Caterers, offering breakfast and lunch entrees and a host of guest vendors who will add a wide variety to the to the weekly offerings of local produce, plants, dairy, beef, poultry, cheese,honey, specialty foods, alpaca products, handmade soaps, artisan wares and more.
Each Saturday guest vendors and special events will focus on a particular theme for that day such as"Happiness is a Warm Puppy" with a K9 demonstration by the CT State Police and a Rabies and Microchip Clinic, "All's Wool that Ends Wool” featuring a live sheep shearing demonstration and"Youth Market Day" when local youngsters under 18 can sell their home-grown produce. Every market Saturday promises to be a lively community event providing education, entertainment and the celebration of Ellington’s rich agricultural heritage, while promoting and supporting local farmers and entrepreneurs.
