On the Ground and in the Air, Knights Could Not be Stopped

On the ground and in the air, the Knights could not be stopped.

The Ellington/Somers Knights traveled to Granby Memorial this past Saturday with a tie for first place in the Pequot Uncas Division on the line. The Knights were coming into the game with a perfect 3-0 record and having won 18 consecutive regular season games. Granby's squad was 1-2 before game time. The contest was held under threatening skies and blustery wind gusts.

The Knights came away with a 35-6 victory.

The Knights opened the scoring in the game when quarterback Joe Leslie lofted a deep pass to wide receiver Brendan Coverdill down the left sideline. Coverdill's leaping grab and Justin Oliver's kick for the extra point made it 7-0 Knights.

Once again Ellington would add to the lead when a fumble in the end zone was recovered by linebacker Andrew Pierce. Once again Oliver delivered the kick and the Knights were off to a fast 14-0 lead.

The Bears were not ready to go down easy and they made several strong advances on offense, led by the running of Justin Blake the Bears threatened several times.

After a Granby punt landed the Knights back on their own 30 yard line, half back Neal Janiga blasted 70 yards down the right sideline for the third Ellington score and a 21-0 lead.

Before the half would end Ellington would strike twice more through the air. Austin Tautkus caught a 27 yard Leslie strike and Christian Schnieder hauled in a 22 yard throw for touchdowns. Oliver's kicks were true in each case and the Knights were running away at half.

Overlooked in the offensive show has been the work of the Ellington defense. Having lost nearly it's entire starting defense to graduation, the new crew of defenders has picked up right where those graduates left off.

Holding the Bears to 6 points and boasting one of the leagues stingiest defenses, the Knights now prepare to return home to Ellington High for a difficult match with rival Stafford High.

The Ellington run defense will be tested by Stafford's Zach Rollins - one of the states leading rushers. The Knights will also look to present coach Keith Tautkus with a never done before team record of 20 consecutive wins in regular season.

Game time is 1 p.m. on Saturday at Ellington High School.
