Somers Grand List Shows Small Increase

The 2012 Grand List increased .51 percent over the 2011 Grand List.

According to Somers Assessor Patricia Juda, the 2012 Grand List increased .51 percent over the 2011 Grand List.

The additional assessment of $4,226,291 would generate an additional $97,711.85 in tax revenue at the current mill rate of $23.12/$1,000.

Real Estate increased 4,946,084 or .67 percent, personal property decreased 700,980 or -3.33 percent and motor vehicles decreased 18,813, a 0.03 percent decrease over last year.

Notable changes include a decrease in personal property of 6,207,040 gross assessment with a 5,301,500 exemption for manufacturing equipment with a net loss of 905,540 due to Specialized Technology Resources, Inc. relocating to East Windsor.

Also, on the real estate list this year is The Housing Authority of the Town of Somers with an addition of 1,680,000 for Woodcrest Phase II. Although this will be abated, the town will collect P.I.L.O.T. (payment in lieu of taxes) based on this figure.

After looking at the Grand List numbers, First Selectwoman Lisa Pellegrini said that this tells her that things are stable, for which she is happy, however, the numbers show that people are very conservative in their purchasing right now.

“They are not buying new cars,” she said.

She added that as noted by Juda, the relocation of STR to East Windsor did affect the town.

“However, news of the layoffs at STR in East Windsor is especially troubling given the fact that several people will be out of jobs,” she said.

Pellegrini also added clarification regarding the abatement of taxes at Woodcrest.

“Taxes at Woodcrest Phase I were abated by a previous administration for 19 years,” she said. “Taxes at Woodcrest Phase II will be paid for by a P.I.L.O.T. The PILOT process requires the town to abate the taxes in order to receive the PILOT fee. In the case of Woodcrest Phase II, the PILOT payment is equal to what the regular tax would have been.”
