Single Stream Recycling Soon to be Offered at Somers Transfer Station

The town recently signed a new contract with USA Hauling & Recycling, Inc. for waste removal at the transfer station.

Starting on Thursday, Somers will now have single stream recycling at the . This means no more sorting of glass, paper, cans, and plastic.  

First Selectwoman Lisa Pellegrini said that this allows recycling to be much easier for residents going to the transfer station.    

The town recently signed a new contract with USA Hauling & Recycling, Inc. for waste removal at the transfer station. While the contract lowers tipping fees, it also provides a rebate for each ton of recyclables at the transfer station.

Thus, the more residents recycle at the transfer station, the lower the cost the town will pay for overall tipping fees. 

"It’s an opportunity for residents not only to help save the environment but also to help the bottom line of the town," Pellegrini said. "For every ton of garbage that can be recycled at the Transfer Station, the town saves $60 in tipping fees. Single stream recycling makes recycling a no brainer. There’s no need to sort paper, plastic, cans and bottles anymore. Saves time and money!"

Pellegrini encourages all residents to recycle. 

"Not only is it good for Mother Earth, it is also better for the bottom line," she said.

Acceptable items include:

Newspapers/Catalogs/Magazines

Direct Mail/envelopes

Paper/Paperboard (examples include cereal and shoe boxes)

Milk and Juice Cartons (ie Aseptic Packaging)

Cardboard & Brown Paper Bags

Plastic Bottles & Containers #’s 1 thru 7

Soda/Juice/Water Bottles (Glass or Plastic)

Food Containers

Glass Bottles/Jars (any color)

Aluminum Cans and Clean Foil

Metal Cans (Tin/Steel/Aluminum)

Unacceptable Items include:

Plastic Bags/Food Liners

Window Glass/Light Bulbs

Dishes/Pyrex/Ceramics

Foam Packaging/Styrofoam

Hazardous Materials

No Recyclables Containing Food Waste
