LIVESTRONG Program There for Cancer Survivors

The in Ellington is offering LIVESTRONG, which is a 12-week, small group exercise program designed for adult cancer survivors.

This free program is hosted in collaboration with LiveStrong, formerly the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The Indian Valley branch just completed its pilot session with eight graduating from the program.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA supports survivors who are in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and returning to their normal lives or their "new normal." Participants will have the opportunity to build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels and self esteem.

"The YMCA collaboration with LiveStrong is a perfect example of how the YMCA responds to community needs," YMCA District Executive Director John Reilly said. "Whereas years ago the YMCA was viewed as a 'gym and swim', we have evolved to meet the needs of all ages, abilities and populations within our community." 

YMCA fitness instructors work with each participant to tailor the program to their individual needs. The instructors are trained in the essentials of cancer, post rehab exercise and supportive cancer care. There are currently 30 participants in this session.
