Heat Index Values up to 104 on Tuesday

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today. Heat index values up to 104 will result in dangerous conditions for anyone spending prolonged periods of time outdoors, according to the NWS.

The heat index values will be up to 104 due to temperatures in the mid and upper 90s and dewpoints near 70.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Avoid prolonged work in the sun or in poorly ventilated areas.

Stay in air-conditioned places, out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. If you have to be outside, take extra precautions and when possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.

Anyone overcome by the heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Call 911 if someone is suffering from heat stroke.

In Ellington and Somers, the libraries and senior centers can be used as cooling centers. 

The is open from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday, from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Friday. The is open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, from 10 a.m. until 5 pm on Friday and Saturday (Saturdays in July and August are from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.), and from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday.

In Somers, the  is open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday. The  is open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday.
