Ellington, Somers Survive Hurricane Sandy

The towns were pretty lucky when it came to damage and power outages.

While Hurricane Sandy brought wind and rain, the towns of Ellington and Somers weathered the storm pretty well.

There was some damage done and power outages caused by trees and power lines coming down, both towns were much luckier than during the October snowstorm, where parts of the towns were severely damaged and then in the dark for up to 15 days.

According to CL&P, Ellington reached 8 percent without power and Somers reached 34 percent, but that was lower than many other places in the state.

Many residents were home from work and school and with many places closed, they passed the time watching television, playing video games, reading, and relaxing.

Earlier in the day, most were convinced power would be lost so anything that required electricity - showering, laundry, cleaning - was done quickly. It's always nice to have a clean body, clothes, and house, but for most, the sense of urgency was unnecessary.

The shoreline of Connecticut didn't fare nearly as well, with massive amounts of damage and power outages caused by the storm. Towns like Stonington and Clinton were in the dark, and very much under water.

Nearly 500,000 residents in the state were without power on Monday night.

In those areas, shelters were opened and residents were evacuated. In Ellington and Somers, both of the emergency operations centers were opened, but the shelters were not.

Ellington residents who need shelter now may use the Regional Emergency Shelter at Vernon Center Middle School in Vernon. Calls to this shelter will be handled by the Vernon Police Dispatch and dispatch can be reached at 860-872-9126.

In Ellington, trash collection is suspended for Tuesday and will run on a one-day delay schedule for the remainder of the week.

For Somers residents, if you are leaving your home for an extended period of time because of the storm, you are requested to notify the police by calling the EOC at 860-763-7063.
