According to Images of America: Somers, from the Somers Historical Society:

"Louis A. Gowdy (1872-1972) and his second wife, Julia Chism Gowdy, were pillars of the Somersville Congregational Church. Louis was a successful farmer who raised tobacco and provided milk for the Somers Creamery. He was a representative from Somers in the Connecticut legislature and held many offices in town."
