According to Images of America: Somers, from the Somers Historical Society:

"George Schiessl was the gracious maitre d' of the Somers Inn from 1938 to 1966 in association with his wife, Emmy (Joerg) Schiessl, and Alphons and Hilda (Schiessl) Joerg. He was endlessly cheerful and thoughtful; on any given day at 2:00 p.m. sharp, he could be seen taking lunch to Mrs. Pio at her variety shp across the street. George was a talented musician, serving as organist and soloist for All Saints Church and performing frequently with the Village Players. While he was honored by the Rotary and Lions clubs among others, he is perhaps best remembered by succeeding generations of children as a sprightly and beloved school crossing guard. In 1996, at age 98, he was an enthusiastic onlooker at the relocation of the old Free Public Library."
