According to Images of America: Ellington, from the Ellington Historical Society:

"Ernie Kupferschmid, pictured here in front of his airplane, won the New England Green Pastures championship in 1953 after having won the Connecticut contest. He received his trophy from Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower at the Eastern States Exposition on September 21, 1953. The award was for raising the most adequate quantity and best quality green feed for a dairy herd on his farm on West Road."
