Ellington, Somers Have Mid-Range Percentages for Pistol Permits

The New Haven Register recently posted a map that charts the pistol permit rates in every town in the state.

The New Haven Register recently posted a map on its site that charts the pistol permit percentages for every town in the state.

The database uses information from the State of Connecticut and 2010 population data to map out pistol permit rates by town. Overall the state's more rural locales have higher percentages of gun ownership than the more urban and suburban areas.

In Ellington, 1,005 permits have been issued for a population of 15,602. That's a percentage of 6.4. In Somers, 725 permits were issued for a population of 11,444 for a percentage of 6.3.

The highest percentage in the state is Canaan with 13.5 percent (167 for a population of 1,234).

Hartford has the lowest rate at 1.5 (1,912 for a population of 124,775).

Around 170,000 Connecticut residents have pistol permits, according to the New Haven Register.

I wish more people Ellington were responsible citizens like those in Canaan. It would be nice to know that I could rely on my neighbors to keep themselves and our town safe.

I have a permit because it's the only legal way to own a pistol and be able to take it off your own property here in CT. I shoot targets and steel plates for relaxation. I also hunt.

I believe in the concept of charter schools. Saw some very good ones in inner cities that workedRead More very hard and made some progress. But I thinks for every charter school that opens a failing public school should close. Why perpetuate failure?

How long will we throw money at a problem that stems from the home and societal policies promotedRead More over the years? How many years and how much money is needed to fix the fact that so many children are growing up in households without fathers? If we give the schools all the money they want, will it fix the problem? I think not. It is not a school issue. It is a decaying society issue. I'm glad I'm old.

Penny, glad to see some (albeit few) smart people are working in Hartford for the people and notRead More just for their political careers! Since the large majority don't pay attention, it is important that we continue to educate people on what our representatives are doing in Hartford. Keep up the good work, and thanks for taking the time to write this article.
