The caption in the Images of America: Ellington reads:

"Nellie McKnight was the fourth librarian of Hall Memorial Library. She served in that position for 38 years, from September 1, 1929, to August 31, 1967. Nellie was born on July 22, 1894, on her father's farm at the intersection of Sadds Mill Road and Muddy Brook Road. She is pictured here in 1913 at her high school graduation. A graduate of Rockville High School and Mt. Holyoke College, she taught German, Latin, and English in high schools in Massachusetts and Connecticut before returning to Ellington in 1929. In her freshman year at Mt. Holyoke College, she wrote in her diary that all the students at the dinner table had nicknames. She was "The Silent Partner." When Nellie found her life's work as a librarian, she bloomed as did her legendary night-blooming cereus. Friends were honored when they received her call that it was time for the flower to open, and they were invited. After her retirement, she wrote an historical pamphlet, "Ellington, Glimpses of Earlier Days." She was named to the Ellington "Wall of Honor" in 2001."
