Ellington Farmers' Market to Accept SNAP

The Ellington Farmers’ Market opens its season Saturday May 4th in Arbor Park, with the ability to process SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits through the EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer). Funding from the U. S. Department of Agriculture has allowed the State of Connecticut to purchase wireless equipment for farmers’ markets not previously participating in the SNAP program. The funding also covers the markets first season of merchant fees. This program offers SNAP participants greater access to fresh and healthy food, while supporting American farmers and local economies. "SNAP participation at farmers' markets helps provide fresh fruit and vegetables to families and expands the customer base for local farmers - a win-win for agriculture and local communities." stated Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan when announcing the help for states to expand the availability of wireless technology in farmers’ markets. The Ellington Farmers’ Market is pleased to be able to offer this service to SNAP customers and help increase their opportunities to access healthy, local food.
