Ellington Farmers' Market Summer Season Off to a Great Start

We are month into the summer season at the Ellington Farmers' Market and things are certainly hopping!  A piglet has been named Hamlet, baby chicks have been cuddled, we learned how to plant in containers and take care of succulents, we saw a sheep shearing, witnessed a CT State Police K9 team and petted adorable puppies available for adoption.  Wow, what a start!

It is such a pleasure to see smiling faces on Saturday mornings supporting the local food movement.  More and more I am beginning to see a core of customers dedicated to supporting our local farmers and food vendors. Thank you!  Did you realize you can do a major portion of your weekly food buying at the market? Not only is the food local and fresh but it's an incredibly pleasant way to shop. From staples such as produce, dairy products, seafood, beef, pork, poultry, pasta and baked goods to jams, jellies, specialty sauces and even a bag of kettle corn to snack on, there is an amazing variety to be found every Saturday.

My favorite program, The Kids Power of Produce, "POP Off" is this Saturday June 14th.  It's a great opportunity to empower kids to make healthy food choices and introduce them to where their food comes from.  On enrollment by parents, the children (ages 5- 12)  receive a market shopping bag, token bag, and a $2 token to purchase fresh produce. Additional $2 tokens will be given each week of participation.  Weekly activities at the POP booth will include smoothie making, sampling produce, scavenger hunts, making vegetable animals, vegetable trivia and more.  Look for the tent with POP logo at the market and join the fun.

We are also hosting a Holistic Health Fair this week with information on Shamantic Healing, massage, Tebetan bowls vibrational healing, yoga and more.  There will be lots to learn and inquirer about!

You won't want to miss the next two weeks entertainment beginning with Dr. Uke and the Glastonbury Ukulele Band  Saturday June 14th.  This delightful group encourages you to bring a chair and join them in singing popular songs from many eras.   Kup, Kup and Zahner will provide the entertainment on June 21st, during our Strawberry Festival.  These three cousins blend instruments and voices beautifully with a special emphasis on three part male harmony. Hear your favorites from Johnny Cash, Jack Johnson, Zac Brown, Crosby Stills & Nash, the Eagles and more.

We have a wonderful lineups of activities coming up including Farming Through the Years, Patriotic Hat Contest, Bugs and Bees Day and lots more. The complete schedule can be found at http://ellingtonfarmersmarket.com/
