Fatal Aircraft Crash at Ellington Airport

An unidentified man was killed when his ultralight aircraft crashed Sunday morning.

Update, 3:10 p.m.

The pilot of an ultralight aircraft that crashed short of the runway at Ellington Airport Sunday has died, state police said.

A trooper said the pilot's wife had been notified, but officials have not released the man's name.

The aircraft appeared to veer to the right on approach, as if to make a go-around or aborted landing, and crashed about 400 yards northwest of the airport runway, police said.

A man who wished not to be identified, but said he is one of the owners of the airport, told reporters the deceased pilot had just purchased the ultralight and had begun storing it at the airport only a week ago.

Official FAA records show the airport is privately owned by J.L.M. Associates of Holyoke, MA. There are 34 aircraft based at the field, including six ultralights, according to airnav.com.

Update, 12:45 p.m.

State police and a representative of the Federal Aviation Administration are still working at the scene.

The ultralight wreckage is in a field several hundred yards northwest of the Ellington Airport runway.

The airport re-opened around 12:45 p.m., when a plane carrying skydivers took off.
