Updated: Trunk-or-Treat at Big Y for Halloween

With wires still down around town, Big Y is allowing residents to celebrate the spooky holiday in the store parking lot.

Updated: Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, 10:50 a.m.

Big Y has confirmed that trunk-or-treat will be set up in the parking lot that is further away from the store and closer to Route 195. It is adjacent to the Sleepy's store, as well.

As a side note, Tolland Patch will be donating its extra candy to the Tolland Fire Department Christmas tour at the end of the event. If you would like to donate your leftover Halloween candy, please drop it off at the Tolland Patch trunk and a delivery will be made this evening.

Original Story:

Could there be a new Tolland Halloween tradition in the works?

For the second year in a row, Tolland residents will be able to gather at the Big Y parking lot to "trunk-or-treat" as the town recovers from storm damage.

The event came to be on the Tolland Patch Facebook page, as readers dicussed whether or not it would be safe to trick-or-treat this Halloween with power outages and hanging wires still affecting the town.

"What a great way to have a safe Halloween that is fun for the kids," one reader said on Facebook. , kids wore their costumes and gathered candy from the trunks of all the participating cars.

Tolland Patch reached out to Big Y following the outpouring of enthusiasm on Facebook, and store managers generously agreed to lend their parking lot for the festive event.

The trunk-or-treat will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Big Y will decide Wednesday morning which portion of the parking lot will be used.

Make sure to wear your spookiest costumes and to stock your trunk with candy!

If you are attending the event, please indicate that in the comments section so Tolland Patch has an idea of how many people will be showing up!

Jayme, a great idea Hurricane or no Hurricane. Could be held next year too, maybe prior to Halloween with prizes for best costume and best decorated car/trunk! We did not attend as we went trick or treating in our neighborhood, but know all must have had a good time. I feel badly for those that felt the need to be so negative toward this idea and have such a nasty attitude. Bah Humbug A Tolland Resident...

Well said Allison. We went trick-or-treating in our neighborhood. It was our 1st real Halloween here and couldn't pass up the opportunity to visit everyone on our street. I am sure all who came had a great time. Thank you for organizing. I bet the families with power issues or hard to travel streets appreciated being able to enjoy Halloween safely. Great idea!

We loved seeing you, Jen! As for the rest of Tolland folk, I'm surprised no one mentioned the "Trick-or-Treat at Town Hall" held on October 25. It is sponsored by the Rec. Department, and Tolland Community Women (formerly Tolland Junior Women) contributed 500 bags which Tolland Juniorettes stickered and filled with a few items located by local businesses. The children then took the bags from office to office collecting candy. I sure hope town families participated in this event, which took place prior to the storm. It provides a safe opportunity for Trick-or-Treating.

We went trick or treating at the town hall last week, just in case Halloween was a bust again with Sandy on the horizon. Had a great time and kids got to see friends from school. Thank you to all who helped organize that evening as well.
