Raccoon in Somers Tests Positive for Rabies

A dog had contact with a rabid raccoon in Somers and the town released the following statement.

The town of Somers posted the following message on its Facebook page after Animal Control received a report of a dog that had contact with a raccoon in the area of Brittany Lane area of Somers:

On Wednesday, April 23, 2014, animal control received a report of a dog that had contact with a raccoon in the area of Brittany Lane area of Somers. The raccoon was submitted for rabies testing at the State Lab in Hartford. The State Lab notified Somers Animal Control on April 24th 2014 that the Raccoon tested positive for rabies. 

We would like to stress the importance to all residents not to approach or handle any wildlife. Please make sure you keep your children away from wild life.

Clinical signs of rabies in animals include fever, loss of appetite, excessive
irritability, unusual vocalization, change in behavior, restlessness, jumping at noises, trouble walking, excess salivation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, stupors or unprovoked aggression. 

Somers Animal Control would like to remind all residents it is state law to vaccinate your dog(s) and cat(s). If your animal is not vaccinated or the vaccination has expired you should contact your veterinarian. If you have any questions in regards to rabies you can contact your local health department, animal control office, or your veterinarian.
