New Somers Salon Open, Raising Money for Charity

Cutting Loose Salon at Somers Crossing held an open house this week and also began raising funds to benefit the family of Ellington resident Oliver Mips.

On Monday, the ladies of Cutting Loose Salon at Somers Crossing held an open house to welcome people into the new business. There was also a raffle to benefit a local charity.

Owner Jaclyn Fallon Rodriguez said that the room was packed and that everyone had a good time.

“It was great,” she said. “It was a good kickoff.”

Fallon Rodriguez is the mother of a little boy and is expecting another baby very soon. For the raffle, she said she wanted to donate locally, and to a charity involving children.

She chose to donate the money to the family of Oliver Mips, a little boy from Ellington who was born at only 26 weeks. He weighed 1 pound, 3 ounces and was only 12 inches long.

Now at almost 2, Oliver and his family will serve as the 2013 Greater Hartford Ambassardor family at the April 28 March for Babies at Rentschler Field. This walk will benefit the March of Dimes – an organization that was able to help Oliver during his stay in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Fallon Rodriguez decided that instead of closing the raffle at the end of the open house, she would leave it open through the month of March. She sold many tickets during the open house, has also sold more during the week, and hopes to sell more before the end of the month.

“Any way we can help,” she said. “A little bit is more than nothing.”

The salon opened on Feb. 21 and Fallon Rodriguez said that people have been stopping in and calling to find out about the salon. She said that business has been good, but not so busy that her sister Meaghan Fallon – the other stylist – won’t be able to handle it when Fallon Rodriguez takes some time off to have her baby.

“It’s working out great,” she said. “I can’t complain.”

The salon is open from noon until 5 p.m. on Monday, from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday, and 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday. The phone number is 860-749-3200.
