Enfield Amvets Post 18 Donates Hams to Champ's Place

Commander Bryan Dusty and Chaplin Charlie Harris brought 15 hams to the pantry in Somers on Monday.

On Monday, Bryan Dusty, Commander of Enfield Amvets Post 18, and Chaplin Charlie Harris donated 15 hams to Champ's Place in Somers.

Dusty said that every year, Post 18, which is part of the Amvets national organization, has fundraisers called White Clover Fund Raisers. In the past couple of years, the group has had fundraisers at Geissler's Supermarket in Somers.

"Because some of this fundraising is done in Somers, we wish to help out some local Somers veterans and Somers area residents in need of assistance at the Champ's Place at the Somers Congregational Church," he said.

According to Dusty, a disabled veteran who has lived in Somers for 33 years, the group buys turkeys for Thanksgiving and hams for Christmas from Geissler's and then goes to Mark Twain's in Enfield and donates the turkeys and hams to veterans who live there. Turkeys and hams are then also donated to veterans in Somers as well.

"We wish to help people in this area when we can," he said.
