Chili Cook Off in Somers to Benefit Local Woman With Cancer

The cook off is happening this Saturday, Jan. 18, from noon to to 4 p.m.

Want to see a bunch of guys dressed as women competing in a chili cook off competition, all for a good cause?

Well, you can do that right here in Somers this weekend.

Somers resident Michael Freedman is hosting the "New England Women's Regional invitational Chili Cook Off at the Pleasant View Golf Center, 452 South Road, on Saturday, Jan. 18 from noon to 4 p.m.

In order to participate, the male cooks have to be dressed like women, Freedman said.

Freedman has been in charge of a number of cook off events, including the official New England Regional Chili Cook Off and a benefit event for USMC Greg Caron in 2012.

He said he decided to put this latest one on after he met Amanda Jordan, a woman from Enfield, who has cancer. Jordan's husband, Philip Jordan, was killed fighting in the Iraq War in 2003.

Freedman said he expects between 42 and 43 participants in the cook off. It costs $8 to enter and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Jordan.
