Cass Get Somers Rotary Award

Somers: Rev. Dr. Barry Cass was recognized Wednesday by the Somers Rotary Club as the Random Acts of Kindness recipient for 2013. The award, given in honor of Maurice “Moe” Parker, is to recognize people who do something nice for someone else, time after time, without expecting anything in return.  Rev. Cass certainly fills that criteria, particularly since the Somers Congregational Church fire in 2012, where Rev. Cass is pastor.

Rev. Cass’s efforts immediately following the fire were to quickly reopen its food pantry, find a substitute meeting facility, and provide pastoral care to both members of his congregation and the community. He helped people who could not hold funeral services in the church, folks who had planned to marry in the church, and parents who wish to have their children baptized in the church. Additionally, 8 new committees were formed to spearhead the reconstruction of the meeting hall, which meant more meetings and projects to follow. All this while continuing to maintain active in the local drug and alcohol abuse program.

Somers Rotary has presented this award to worthy individuals for the past 12 years.
